About your host, Mary
This experience involves learning how to ride a horse using your voice (no kicking or pulling)!. We’ve spent the last thirty years training horses, riding very long distances all over the world, sorting out people’s ‘problem ponies!’ and teaching nervous beginners. I’m a qualified riding instructor, we both love yoga which we use within our riding. We are saddened by the normal way people are taught to ride - horses are not machines! Maximum 3 riders per session so NO large groups where everyone just follows the lead horse. We limit the experience to just nine people per week so that the horses keep enjoying it! We run a very ethical yard - the horses (mostly arabs) are unshod, living outside in a herd. We love cooking and make bread daily; Richard grows all our vegetables and our hens provide the eggs so lunch means minimum food miles.

What We'll Do
Happy to collect you from Baldock Station; back at our cottage we can provide boots/jackets. Over a welcoming drink and a snack (arrive hungry please!) you can tell us your riding experience; we pay serious attention to your expectations as we aim to provide each rider with the ideal equine partner for your day with us.
Having signed a disclaimer and had a hat fitted you’ll meet your horse and be shown how to feed carrots, nominally groom and do ground work using voice commands. We normally divide the riding (bridleways or country lanes) into two sessions of 45/50m each divided by home made lunch or supper with wine but we might keep you up for 90/100min and eat afterwards ; depending on weather and your fitness.
We can go as slowly as you like, you won’t be pushed out of your comfort zone! Forgive us in advance for putting the horses’ happiness a very close second to your safety :-) but the experience of viewing the world through the ears of a happy horse could start you on an amazing equine adventure. -

Where you’ll be
We take you on a personal adventure to horsemanship - which can be very different from just riding. We teach you to experience the world from the horses’ point of view. But we’re happy to point out badger setts, fox holes, local fauna and the jackdaw tree. It should be a unique experience on gentle, sensitive horses who enjoy going out. Companionable silence is also an option if preferred - we want you to have the best, relaxed time possible
